Dear Anne,

Thanks for posting on the forum, it's been a while since someone has!

There are probably many places you could start to learn more, you might want to check the list of books he wrote in the Books section of this site. A great many are actually in English; many are about he and his life/family/friends and/or his many passions. I've actually only read The Homecoming myself, which is an great little book.

Exactly what is it you'd like to learn?

Regards,

I am a playwright, and I'm doing research for a musical libretto set in the mid-1950s. Part of my research has included old New Yorker magazine articles, as I have the DVD collection. I had never heard of Joseph Wechsler until a few months ago, and I have become a big fan. I just finished reading "A Reporter at Large: The Wooden Beam," from the May 10, 1952 New Yorker. Fascinating article about the Czech/Bavarian border, and two mentions of the village (Selb) where my mother's family is from.
Once my research is done, I'll read more of his New Yorker articles. Any suggestions where to learn more about him (my German isn't that great)?

Hi Bob,

We have the NY Times DVDs, I just haven't had time to put all of the articles on yet. I've done the 40s, and half of the 50s. The other articles from the magazines would be great though. I hope Poppy and Molly will be able to meet.
Could you list the missing issue dates on the various magazine articles? Some of the months are missing.
I am working to find copies and I will send the articles to you as I locate them.
Thanks.
I have ordered the complete New Yorker archives on DVD. I will get the articles to you, unless you already have access to them.
Also, I am in the process of purchasing a number of the magazines and will get those articles to you, as well.
I will let her know.
Thanks for taking care of the site. I hope I can help you a bit.

Hi again Bob,

I'm sure Joseph's daughter would be very pleased to hear that! She's actually in Vienna right now, so maybe you guys could get in contact, and see what could be done about getting more articles on the site, if you happen to have some handy right now. I've visited Vienna a few times now, and I understand a little of what you mean. It is a beautiful and magical city.

Take care,
Thank you so much for your kind response.
I will send you all of the articles that I can get my hands on.
I live vicariously through Joseph Wechsberg and read his books over and over.
I visited Vienna once upon a time, fell in love with it, moved there, married an Austrian and our two daughters were born there.
My oldest daughter is now studying in Vienna at The Diplomatic Academy.
You know where my heart is.

Dear probono,

Thank you for posting your question. I'm glad you reminded me about this. We just noticed a few days ago that this article was in the wrong place, and listed twice. It should be up with the Holiday magazines. I will move it shortly. It was published in January 1959. Yes it is only partially available. We do not have most of the articles, and must rely upon users and forum members to send them to us when possible, as is the case with article, which was only sent partially. We are trying, when time and resources permit, to add more articles to the site. I just added four Gourmet articles this morning. The New Yorker article section is the most complete, and will one day have all of the articles listed there in pdf form. If by chance you have any articles not listed on the site, please let us know and we would be grateful to have the information and add them to the site.

Thank you again for your interest and support,

Regards,

You asked where you might find a copy of Sweet & Sour.

Aha! Clearly you haven't yet discovered Abebooks! Put 'abebooks' into Google >>>
or paste the following into the http box at the top of your search page

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchEntry
and fill in the gaps

You'll find numerous copies going second-hand starting as low as £3.

Warning: abebooks is addictive!
